“Steady”

What picture comes to your mind when you think of the word “steady”? Perhaps you think of a huge slab of concrete that serves as the foundation for a building, or maybe you think of the careful hand of a surgeon, or an aircraft carrier moving unshakably through the water. Throughout the Bible, God points us to the most permanent fixtures in the created order as a reference point for the steadiness of His promises. For example, He says in Psalm 89:35-37, “Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David. His offspring shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me. Like the moon it shall be established forever, a faithful witness in the skies.” In His kindness, God directs our eyes to concrete examples He has built into creation to help us understand just how trustworthy He is. In this week’s stanza of Psalm 119, the psalmist applies this language of steadiness to God’s Word, exclaiming, “Forever, O Lord, Your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Your faithfulness endures to all generations; You have established the earth, and it stands fast.” His point is that God and His Word can be trusted even more readily than the steadiest parts of creation. May the Lord help us to trust Him more this week as His Word reminds us of this wonderful reality!
