Society is buzzing with talk of extraterrestrial life again, wondering with a mixture of fear and excitement at the possibility of being visited by intelligent beings different from ourselves. However, there was a day long ago when the most intelligent being—not a creature, but the very Creator Himself—disclosed His veiled identity before three unsuspecting disciples! Matthew 17 recounts a glorious event that Matthew only heard secondhand from Peter, James, and John. The Lord Jesus, on a high mountain, unveiled His divine glory before them in a dramatic way. Peter wrote of this event near the end of his life and said something remarkable in 2 Peter 1:18-19, “We ourselves heard this very voice borne from Heaven , for we were with Him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place.” Peter claimed that, despite having the extremely unique privilege of being present at Jesus’ transfiguration, the eyewitness testimony of the apostles recorded in the New Testament Scriptures is more helpful! That means we should treasure God’s Word—the Holy-Spirit-superintended record of those very events, preserved and passed down to us today to strengthen our faith in Jesus and sustain our loyalty to Him despite difficulty! I urge you, friend, to make God’s Word your meditation this week!
