In 1978, a local Southern Baptist church called, First Southern Baptist Church on King's Row in Reno, NV, wanted to plant churches. In the next few years they planted three: First Baptist Sparks, South Reno Baptist Church & Granite Hills Baptist Church.
Granite Hills incorporated as a church on July 2nd, 1979 at 2pm in the afternoon with approximately 18 charter members.
Like any church, there are ups and downs and Granite Hills Baptist Church had those early on. Attendance ran around 10 people on a Sunday morning. Rudy Duett went to a missions camp in 1982 at Glorieta, New Mexico, to look for pastors that wanted to come out west. It was there that he met Pastor Thompson and Mrs. Janice. They felt the call to come to Reno and came out. On Thanksgiving week of 1984, Pastor Thompson and Mrs. Janice stayed at the McBride's and were called to be the pastor of GHBC on the following Sunday.
In 1997, Granite Hills Baptist Church was able to move from the rented building at the Stead Airport. (We build & held church behind a sign that said "Authorized Personnel Only")
We moved into our present church building that we built almost labor free. The cost was approximately $450,000 and was paid off in 8 years through faithful members supporting our building fund.
Pastor Thompson would serve Granite Hills until August of 2005, when he went to be with the Lord.
On October 11, 2005, Granite Hills Baptist Church called a Deacon out of the church to serve as Pastor. The name of that deacon was, Mark Morton and his wife Hope. Granite Hills Baptist Church has had two pastors in the last 32 years of service, which is unusual for many Baptist Churches.
In June of 2012, Granite Hills Baptist Church finished an addition to the church building of an Educational Building that was 7,250 square feet. The cost was $1,035,000. That is also being paid for by our faithful members supporting our building fund.
We look forward to continuing to grow & expand into our community.
